Color
Brand colors
nyc.gov has three brand colors: black, white, and blue. As the most neutral high-contrast colors, black and white are used for the majority of our visual design. Blue is reserved for places where a user can take action, such as buttons, pagination, and certain input fields.
Together, these colors contribute to an experience that is easy to read, scan, and understand, while the most actionable elements stand out from their surroundings.
Interactive colors
These colors are used in interactions such as hovering, typing, and clicking.
Foreground colors
Foreground colors are used for elements on top of a background like text, interaction states, messages, and borders.
Background colors
Some pages on nyc.gov feature a background gradient of blue and orange. All other backgrounds are either black, white, or gray, with varying opacity.
Auxiliary colors
Auxiliary colors are only used to draw the eye to warnings, alerts, or validation messages.
