Digital Design System

Accessibility

Overview

All NYC government digital products must be accessible.

Digital Accessibility is required by Local Law 26 of 2016 [PDF]. The law mandates that websites meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 level AA standard.

The NYC Digital Design System will help teams throughout the city meet and exceed this standard.

How the design system helps with accessibility

NYC Digital Service has taken the following steps to build accessibility into the design system:

  • Designed each component, pattern, and brand element with accessibility in mind
  • Tested each component to make sure it meets WCAG 2.2 level AA guidelines
  • Included accessibility requirements in our component guidance and brand standards
  • Reviewed each component with the city’s Digital Accessibility Coordinator
  • Tested our products with users with disabilities
